What do you mean by sexual dysfunction, sexual problem or sexual disorder? 

Sexual response is a true psycho physiological experience which has four phases called desire, excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Any problem occurring at any phase of sexual response cycle can lead to sexual dysfunction. A sexual problem or sexual dysfunction refers to any problem during any stage of the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or couple from engaging in a successful sexual intercourse and experiencing full satisfaction from the sexual activity. In other words sexual dysfunction or sexual problem is a person’s inability to participate in a sexual relationship as he or she would wish.

Based on the sexual response cycle sexual problems can be broadly categorized into sexual desire disorders, sexual arousal disorders and orgasm disorders.

Sexual desire disorders

Sexual desire disorder includes hypoactive sexual desire disorder and sexual aversion disorder.

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder is also known as lack of sexual desire or loss of sexual desire. Loss of sexual desire is characterized absence of sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity.

Sexual aversion disorder is characterized by an aversion to and avoidance of genital sexual contact with a partner or by masturbation. There is treatment for loss of sexual desire and sexual aversion disorder. Sexual arousal disorders

Sexual arousal disorders include both erectile dysfunction (Erectile dysfunction / Male erectile disorder / Impotence) and female sexual arousal disorder (Lack of lubrication or loss of lubrication).

Erectile dysfunction / Male Erectile Dysfunction / Male Erectile Disorder / Impotence / Psychogenic Impotence.

Erectile dysfunction is one of the most common sexual problems. In Kerala (South India) erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual problem reported. Out of the 4003 patients with sexual problems seen at Dr. Promodu’s Institute from February 01, 2006 to January 31, 2011 erectile dysfunction accounts for 42 percent. The number of people seeking treatment for sexual problem in general and erectile dysfunction or impotence in particular is increasing day by day.  Erectile dysfunction is also known as impotence, male erectile disorder, erectile disorder, erection problem etc. Both organic and psychogenic impotence are included here. Erectile dysfunction is an inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient enough to have a successful, satisfactory sexual intercourse.

The cause of erectile problem (erectile dysfunction or impotence) may be organic or psychological or a combination of both. Problems like hormonal deficiency, venous leak, arterial insufficiency etc are organic causes of erectile dysfunction. Intra psychic or interpersonal or marital conflicts, past traumatic experiences, anxiety, guilt etc are psychological causes of erectile problem.

Treatment for erectile dysfunction: Treatment of erectile disorder or erectile problem includes sex therapy, medication, venous ligation surgery, penile prosthesis implant operation etc depends upon the causes. Female sexual arousal disorder

In women principal problem is vaginal dryness or lack of lubrication. It is also known as loss of lubrication or lack of lubrication. This is one of the most common sexual problems of women reported in Kerala, India. We have treatment for all the female sexual problems at Dr. Promodu’s Institute.

Orgasm disorders

Orgasm disorders include female orgasmic disorder and male orgasmic disorder.

Female orgasmic disorder / inhibited female orgasm / Anorgasmia

Female orgasmic disorder is also known as inhibited female orgasm or Anorgasmia. Inhibited female orgasm is a recurrent or persistent inhibition of female orgasm. Orgasm either does not occur or markedly delayed. Orgasmic dysfunction is more common in women than in men.

Male orgasmic disorder / Orgasmic dysfunction / inhibited orgasm / Anorgasmia / delayed ejaculation / retarded ejaculation / anejaculation

Male orgasmic disorder is also known as inhibited male orgasm, Anorgasmia, delayed ejaculation, retarded ejaculation, anejaculation etc.  Male orgasmic dysfunction is a condition in which a man either does not achieves an orgasm and ejaculation or it is markedly delayed. Masters and Johnson reported an incidence of male orgasmic dysfunction of only 3.8 percent in a group of 447 patients. Male orgasmic dysfunction or delayed ejaculation is one of the major causes of male infertility. Study conducted in a group of 4003 cases of sexual problems in Kerala, south India by Dr. Promodu’s Institute found 770 cases of infertility. It is found that delayed or retarded ejaculation (male orgasmic dysfunction) accounted for 12% of male infertility in this group.

In another study conducted by Dr. Promodu’s Institute, Kerala, south India in a group of 137 cases of male orgasmic dysfunction, 50 patients underwent treatment full course of with successful therapeutic outcome in 84% cases. Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is another orgasmic dysfunction. Premature ejaculation is the second largest sexual problem for which men seek treatment in Kerala as well as south India. Out of the 4003 patients with sexual problems seen at Dr. Promodu’s Institute from February 01, 2006 to January 31, 2011 premature ejaculation accounts for ----- percent. Premature ejaculation is also known as fast ejaculation, early ejaculation, early orgasm, early orgasmic response etc. In short premature ejaculation is the inability of a man to control the ejaculation till the completion of sexual intercourse in such a way that both partners achieve full sexual satisfaction.  There are multiple causes for premature ejaculation such as infection or any other disease of the genito - urinary system, hypersensitivity of the penis, habituation, anxiety, mental conflicts etc.  Treatment includes sex therapy, medicine or surgery. Sexual Pain disorders

Sexual pain disorders are among the common sexual problems in the general population. This includes Dyspareunia and Vaginismus.

Dyspareunia

Dyspareunia is recurrent or persistent genital pain occurring in either men or women before, during, or after intercourse. Dyspareunia is much more common in women than in men. There may be organic or psychogenic or combined causes for Dyspareunia. There is effective treatment for Dyspareunia.

Vaginismus

Vaginismus is one of the major sexual problems suffered by women in Kerala, India. Vaginismus is an important cause of infertility in women. Vaginismus is the spasm of muscles that surround the vagina, causing occlusion of the vaginal opening. Penile insertion and intercourse become impossible or painful. Often Vaginismus patient is a nuisance for the gynecologist. Most patients with Vaginismus do not allow the gynecologists to examine them. It was believed that vaginismus is less common. But study conducted in a group of 4003 cases of sexual problems in Kerala, south India by Dr Promodu’s Institute found 770 cases of infertility. It is found that Vaginismus accounted for 17% of female infertility in this group. At Dr. Promodu’s Institute we have treated more than 500 cases of Vaginismus. Most of them came with the complaints of inability to engage in sexual contact. The couple with longest duration of unconsummated marriage treated at Dr. Promodu’s Institute was of 15 years and 3 months. We do have 100% success rate in the treatment of Vaginismus.
